It seems as if lately there are a number of new LP12 owners around. This indicates that there are still a number of LP12s out there that are looking for a new home. Recently I was contacted by someone who has tracked down a superb mid-eighties unit. However, the owner reported that the Sondek starts up really slowly, needing a bit of help, and then after a few minutes the platter stops. This is usually a sign of a Valhalla power supply that is failing. We will get this sorted out for the client soon, once he can visit one of our support specialists. We will report back and share this new owner's exciting journey.
We are going to check the power supply, fit new capacitiors, and service the unit. We will then help the owner match his phono stage with the cartridge of his choice.
There are some things the owner can do by himself so long. One is to apply some love to the lid, using the method Werner Swanepoel used. [ See article here... ]. This takes time but the result is worth the effort. The plinth can be treated with Teak Oil. The wood dries out over time and it is necessary to coat it copiously in the beginning, allowing the wood to soak up the oil.
For the most part this LP12 is in a good condition. The Basik arm seems OK, but we will check it, and add a new cartridge of the owner's choice. Oh, and you will notice the counterweight has been removed. Cleverly done by either the seller or buyer – never transport a turntable with the counterweight still attached. This could contribute to wrecking the bearings.
